A little about me

Who are you?

Hi, Justin Palmer here. I’m a 26 year old married man living with my beautiful wife in Memphis, TN.
I spend 80% of my time doing the web thing. I’ve played guitar for about 8 years, and still try to pick it up every once in a while when I’m not tied to the computer. I’m a fan of the heavier side of music, but have a special place in my heart for the blues and southern gospel.

What do you do?

That’s a great question. You can call me a designer, but I loathe that term. Why? It’s an all-encompassing label given to those in the design industry. It lacks any real context. Basically, I’m an experience engineer. I have ninja-like skills in all the things that deal with what the user interacts with. From Photoshop to Javascript and everything in between, I feel right at home. I take a lot of pride in constructing interfaces and designing the process which allows users to interact with an application.

I’m also a developer (as a hobby). Because programming (Rails specifically) is my hobby, I have a great understanding of the environment that developers work in. I’m well versed in version control, I manage my own VPS using that command line thing, and I deploy my apps using Capistrano. This doesn’t mean that you want to hire me as your sole rails developer, it means I’ll work really well helping them out.

Finally, I have a deep passion for Open Source Software. I love working in the open source space, especially with talented developers. The project I’m really proud of at the moment, is the cms/blogging application powering this site, Mephisto. In addition to that, I’m also a member of the Prototype core team.

Where do you work?

Every where and no where. I am a freelancer, and I work from the bedroom/office of my apartment. I’ve worked for individuals, startups ranging from 3-50 employees, and have also worked for some major corporations as a subcontractor.
