RMagick: Trouble in paradise

—Wednesday, September 07 2005

I’ve been trying to get my portfolio up and running on my server for the past few days. The bad part about it, it has nothing to do with Apache, Rails, Fastcgi not working–RMagick is the culprit.

I’ve installed ImageMagick including all dev packages from yum and then installed RMagick via Ruby Gems. Everything showed up as being fine. Until I slipped into irb to test things out.

irb(main):001:0> require "RMagick"
LoadError: No such file to load -- RMagick.so
        from /usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/RMagick.rb:11:in `require'
        from /usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/RMagick.rb:11
        from (irb):1:in `require'
        from (irb):1

RMagick.so could not be found? Being the unix rookie I am, I searched for RMagick.so using locate to no avail. It’s not on my system anywhere.

I then uninstalled the RMagick gem and I built ImageMagick and RMagick from source. This didn’t seem to work either.

...

I’ll be honest, during the ./configure process I’m not sure what additional flags I need to supply if this might be what is causing the problems.

I’m running on Fedora. If anyone has any suggestions, I’m all -ears- eyes.
